I stand in front of the RVC emblem ready to start veterinary school and begin my veterinary career.

2026 Resume

I am gently moving a turtle I found on one of the ODU Tick Team field sites. Cleaning sites and sampling for ticks were part of my responsibilities as a student researcher in RUMS.

2016

My name is Captain Kirsten Young and I am currently a service member in the Army Veterinary Corps. My qualifications include a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (equivalent to Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine), and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons membership.

I grew up in Caroline County, Virginia with dogs and cats as siblings. Through caring for my siblings, I developed a childhood dream to become a veterinarian.

I received an Advanced Diploma at Atlee High School and travelled to Costa Rica, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. After high school I completed a Bachelor of Science degree, major Biology, and a Secondary Education Teaching License for Biology at Old Dominion University (ODU).

I chased my childhood dream by becoming a veterinary assistant in 2017. I was accepted to Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and moved to London, England in 2018. While studying abroad I travelled to Italy, Portugal, France, and Greece. I graduated RVC and was inducted into the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2022. I am currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and United States.

My extracurricular activities have included completing volunteer work with the Norfolk, Virginia aquarium, ODU Tick Team Research lab, and local humane societies. In addition to the academic extracurricular interests above, I enjoy non-academic hobbies such as scuba diving, mountaineering, occasionally bungee jumping off a 160ft crane, and skydiving.

This site is to showcase achievements accumulated through my various degrees and careers, including my developing veterinary career, MonarchTeach Student Apprenticeship, and Research for Undergraduates in Math and Science (RUMS) program.

I am telling my experiences of  MonarchTeach to incoming ODU students, hoping to inspire the idea of teaching in their future.

During this scuba diving session we swam 60 ft under water to see a sunken airplane.

The photo to the left is the crane I jumped off. The photo to the right is one of the few times I was able to clear my mind of thoughts, stop thinking, and literally jump.
